We should retreat because Jesus found it necessary to retreat.
If the Son of God found it important, then who are we to not follow his example? He “often” went to lonely places (Luke 5:16). That’s an amazing verse to ponder. The word often means just that - often. Jesus regularly found time to escape his routine and go away. He left people and found his heart again.
We humans cannot live our life on empty and call it the abundant life. We need times of renewal, retreat, and restoration. Through regular times of engaging this rhythm we are sustained. We are filled and we are ready to walk the next part of our journey. But we cannot do this empty. We cannot live depleted and call it a living.
We only have one life. In the end, if we have not lived it well, then we have not fulfilled the promise that Jesus offers us in the abundant life. We cannot live our lives in 5th gear having stripped our soul of the lower gears that help us to slow down, live intentionally, and simply enjoy.
